This is where the main stage of our expedition begins. In Colonia Angamos, alongside mestizos, live Matsés indigenous people, whose way of life we will be able to learn about.
Lunch in Angamos.
After lunch, we load our gear onto a boat and, together with Matsés guides, head upstream on the Javari River and its tributary, the Gálvez River. Today we face a 4-hour journey along the river. We will reach a traditional Matsés community house – a maloca – where we will stay overnight.

In its upper reaches stands a Matsés maloca – the goal of our trip. The Loboyacu is no more than 20 meters wide. On its banks, we will observe the majestic tropical rainforest and the animals and birds of the Amazon. By lunchtime, we will reach the maloca, meet and get acquainted with the Matsés living there. Days 6 – 8. November 30 – December 2, 2026 (Monday – Wednesday). Life in the maloca with the Matsés indigenous people
In the heart of the great Amazon rainforest, we will spend several days with the Matsés. Time will stop for us. We will communicate with the Matsés and learn about their culture. We can go into the jungle with hunters, some of whom still hunt using only bows and arrows. We will go fishing using barbasco root from a canoe hollowed from a single tree trunk, learn how they make traps for different animals, how they smoke armadillos out of their burrows, and how they catch caimans with their bare hands. We will see how candles are made from the fragrant copal tree resin, and if we are lucky, we might even catch an anaconda. In the dark by the fire, together with an ethnographer, we will hear stories from the Matsés about their history, mythology, and daily life.
The Matsés perform rituals involving a special mixture of snuff tobacco and the venom of the kambo frog (Phyllomedusa bicolor). This sacred ceremony holds great significance for the Matsés and helps them purify their body, their mind and sharpen their vision. Whilst it has a strong effect on the human body. Such effects can vary greatly and are unpredictable, making it extremely risky for the uninitiated.
