Day 2. February 27, 2027 (Saturday) / May 5, 2027 (Wednesday). OUAGADOUGOU – BAZOULE – BOBO-DIOULASSO (365 km, 6.5 hrs driving)

After breakfast, departure to Bobo Dioulaso. Stop in Bazoule to visit the pond with holy crocodiles. Bazoule sacred pond is a living testament to animal-human symbiosis, where the immense, slumbering sacred crocodiles are so docile that children play on their backs.
After photo moment with crocodile, keep driving to Bobo.
Half way lunch in a local restaurant in Boromo.
In this region we gonna visit to a Voute Nubienne house, an architectural revolution transforming the Sahel, proving that a simple earthen vault can replace scarce and expensive imported metal roofs.
Time permitting, also visit a Peul (Fula) people family. Peul are famous as traditional people (often nomadic herders) of the Sahel whose life revolving around long-horned zebu cattle, and who are believed to be one of the most beautiful people on Earth.
Upon arrival in Bobo Dioulasso, visit to the famous adobe mosque of Bobo – a breathtaking masterpiece of Sudano-Sahelian architecture, resembling a monumental, organic sandcastle built from hand-molded clay and wooden spikes. Proceed to the old quarter, where we can see local community resting with traditional beer and their mysterious river with sacred cat fish which are revered as reincarnated ancestors, never to be harmed.
During this period (from March to May) we are in the high season for so called “dry funerals”, which means the big funeral ceremonies in order to honor those people who passed away within previous year. Bobo people are famous for their crowded and very vivid mask performances dedicated to funeral ceremonies. It is curious that during these funeral ceremonies appear completely different masks which would be completely impossible to spot neither during another season nor upon request.
All this makes our chances high in order to see something special in the region of Bobo Dioulasso, as well as in other places along our itinerary. Once we are informed on any special occasions, we would definitely change our plans in order to grab the chance and witness the ceremony.

Day 3. February 28, 2027 (Sunday) / May 6, 2027 (Thursday). BOBO DIOULASO – DOMES OF FABEDOUGOU – BANFORA – SINDOU HOLY PEAKS – BANFORA (280 km, 5 hrs driving)

After breakfast, drive eastward to Banfora region – the lush, postcard-perfect green oasis of southwestern Burkina, where endless sugar cane fields, dramatic waterfalls, and a chain of ten idyllic lakes defy the surrounding dust.
On our way, in the morning, we explore the Domes of Fabedougou, a surreal, geological wonderland of massive, ancient sandstone formations that have been sculpted by eons of rain into smooth, titanic, dome-like beehives. Continue to visit the waterfall.
Around noon, lunch at Banfora. In the afternoon drive to Sindou. First we visit the Holy Peaks – the jagged, mystical "canoes of stone" on the border of Mali, a spectacular and sacred labyrinth of sheer rock needles where spirits are said to reside.
Meet the traditional hunters’ family who also know the secret of the traditional medicine. Presentation of the local masks which belong to the Senufo people. These masks, as well as many others in the region, have a strong connection with the spirits of the ancestors.

Day 4. March 1, 2027 (Monday) / May 7, 2027 (Friday). BANFORA – NIANSOGONI TROGLODYTE VILLAGE – BOBO-DIOULASO (255 km, 8 hrs driving)

After breakfast, drive some 60 km eastward, almost to the border with Mali. We have to have challenging hike with 1.5 hours on a dirt road and 1 hour steep climb up hill in order to explore one of the most interesting sites of Burkina Faso – the deserted village of Niansogoni on a hill top.
There is an opinion that Niansogoni, the abandoned village on the hill, was once inhabited by a tribe related to the Tellem tribe in the Bandiagara (Dogon people valley) in Mali. The mountain range in the region is allegedly geologically related to the Dogon valley.
But according to the latest research, Niansogoni village was founded in 14 century and inhabited by Wara people (subgroup of Senoufo) and was abandoned in 1980th. Despite the fact that Wara, as well as Tellem of Bandiagara, were living in the cave-type houses, and they are both considered troglodytes, Niansogoni was hardly part of Tellem culture.
This village is one of many examples of settlements in Burkina Faso and Mali where tribes sought refuge during the tribal wars in the 14th century. The unique aspect of Niansogoni is the good condition of the dwellings. The village has only recently been visited by travelers because it is remote and not easily accessible.
In the afternoon, rather long drive back to Bobo. Option for traditional music and dance in the evening as it is dry funerals season in Bobo area.
At the end of the day in Bobo Dioulasso, time permitting, we may also visit local handcrafts, surrounding village or observe the traditional preparation of shea butter – world’s most used cosmetic product.
We also have an option to have dinner at home with a local family.
Overnight at hotel Hotel Sissiman 4* or similar.

Accommodation included: Hotel Sissiman 4* or similar
Meals included: breakfast

Day 5. March 2, 2027 (Tuesday) / May 8, 2027 (Saturday). BOBO-DIOULASO – BONI – OUAGADOUGOU (360 km, 6.5 hours driving)

After breakfast, departure for Boni. Upon arrival, we attend the performance mask dance of Bwa, or Bwaba, people at the public square: different types of masks and traditional dances for some 4 hours. The Bwaba masks originate from the southwest of Burkina Faso. They also live in the east with the Marka Dafing and in the west with the Bobo people, as well as in the southeast of this country, owned by ethnic groups grouped under the name of Gurunsi.
This terrifying yet sacred performance of the "wooden owls" that serve as the living judges of morality, punishing wrongdoers and escorting the souls of the deceased to the afterlife.
The first release of the masks will be presented by two types of masks: those who use "leaf masks" completely covering the body called "Nwantantay," considered the oldest and most sacred, because it embodies the divinity "Do" and made among the Bwaba people of all regions.
Followed by another release of the masks, "Lanlé" carved in wood and decorated with fibers, they are often linked to the cult of the god Lanlé. The largest, called "mask-plates" or "mask-boards", are particularly impressive.
After lunch we will continue to attend the series of outings and mask dances with the "N'wimbe" fiber masks, which peculiarity concerns clan and family myths. They represent many animals (hyena, antelope, warthog, wild buffalo, monkey, crocodile, snake, butterfly, fish, bird, owl) and some humans (the leper, the madman and the woman).
We will have the opportunity to take best photos and then continue to Ouagadougou in the evening.
Arrival and rest in the hotel.
Dinner and overnight at Azalai Hotel Ouagadougou 4* or similar.
