TRAVEL PROGRAM: TOUR TO CAUCASUS

Day 1. June 27, 2020. Makhachkala – Kala-Koreish – Kubachi

Arrival in Makhachkala at 11 a.m. Meeting and acquaintance with the guide at the airport of Kaspiysk.
Departure by SUVs to Yuzhdag (South Dagestan), lunch in the village of Madzhalis on the way. We make a transfer to Kala-Koreish (140 km, 3.5 hours on the way), where we will spend the evening.
Kala-Koreish ("Black Fortress") - the medieval capital of large feudal property, Kaitag Usmii, today is a maze of ancient buildings with terraces descending from the top of the mountain. A mosque of the 9th century as well as a sheikh mausoleum, a caravanserai and a restored museum, have been preserved here.
With the development of lowland Dagestan in the 18th and 19th centuries, the significance of Kala-Koreish began to decline, and under Soviet rule in the 1930s the last inhabitants were evicted from it. Only the cemetery, which became a place of pilgrimage, has survived.
Evening drive along the mountain roads (20 km, 1 hour on the way) to Kubachi, the "city of artisans". The aul is located at an altitude of about 1650 meters. Before the return of the rural status of the Kubachi urban type village in 2015, it was the only urban settlement in Dagestan located in the mountainous area.
The first acquaintance with the Kubachi, a meeting with a local guide, a walk in the evening aul, and a master class. Short drive to the guesthouse near Kubachi.
Accommodation in a guesthouse in Kubachi, on a double basis.
Lunch, dinner included.

Day 2. June 28, 2020. Kubachi – Caspian sea

After breakfast, we will explore Kubachi, one of the largest traditional centers for the artistic processing of metal in Caucasus, as well as stone and wood carvings. From the early Middle Ages, Kubachi aul was known for the manufacture of chain-mail and weapons, as well as the manufacture of silverware. The current name of the village is of Turkish origin, and before that it was known under the Persian name "Zerichgeran", which means "chain-mail maker". Until now, there is no reliable data when this settlement originated, it is only known that the territory of the present Kubachi was part of the long-vanished Caucasian Albania. The Russian historian V. Tatishchev told the following about the Kubachians in the 18th century: "The Kubachi are a small people in Dagestan, but are very famous for their work, such as guns, cloth, cloaks, gold, silver and iron trifles, and through this a lot of false coins of Persian, Turkish and Russian gold and silver occurred."
We will visit the most interesting places in Kubachi, explore the Kubachian towers, which date back to the 13-14 centuries, and relate to that period of the development of mountain fortification in Dagestan, when there was a gradual process of decreasing the massiveness of defensive structures, and the importance of natural protective relief factors increased significantly. Then alarm watch towers were erected. One of them, well-preserved, is used in Kubachi as a residential house.
Acquaintance with artisans, national cuisine and ethno-program, photographing in national clothes.
Lunch in Kubachi and transfer to the recreation center "Parnas", located on the shores of the Caspian Sea (120 km, 3 hours on the way).
Evening on the clean beach of the Caspian Sea and dinner on the sea.
Accommodation in double rooms at the Parnas recreation base on the Caspian Sea.
Breakfast, lunch, dinner are included.

Day 3. June 29, 2020. Caspian sea – base camp of Pabaku mountain in Burshi (2300 m)

Breakfast in a cafe of the recreation base Parnas, the opportunity to swim in the emerald water of the Caspian Sea.
We leave the coast and go to the mountainous region of Dagestan, to the Laksky district, famous for its beautiful Dyultydag mountain range and stunning landscapes. We climb the mountains, driving to Burshi (150 km, takes at least 4 hours). Aul Burshi, located at an altitude of 2250 meters above sea level, is the most remote village in the region of mountains. A large village in the past, now Burshi has less than 40 families. From here there is a view of the Dyultydag mountain range and the valley of the Burshi river, overcoming which and moving to the left bank, we set up our base camp for climbing Pabaku.
The second half of the day we will spend alone with nature, sitting by the fire and discussing our plans for climbing. And members of the expedition who perform horseback riding on Pabaku will also have horseback riding lessons.
Accommodation in tents (double) in the base camp of Pabaku.
Breakfast, lunch, dinner are included.

Day 4. June 30, 2020. Pabaku base camp (2300 m) – Pabaku summit camp (2900 m)

After breakfast, we hike (lunch on the way) southward, to the foot of Mount Pabaku. We have to walk about 15 kilometers along the Burshi River, and then its feeder, Akulalu, where we force Akulalu and continue to move in the beautiful valley of the Artsalinekh River. The mountain river Artsalinekh flows out from under the Dyultydag glacier on the northern slope of the ridge of the same name and originates at an altitude of 3240 meters.
Our hike passes through the almost pristine picturesque alpine meadows with flowering slopes and a river valley and the yawning top of Pabaku pyramid.
The waters of these rivers are spawning grounds for trout, the fauna is represented by rodents, snakes, hares, foxes, wolves and proudly soaring eagles. Brown bears and wild boars are also found, although rarely. The main decorations of the peaks are mountain turs, but, unfortunately, their population is getting smaller and smaller every year due to poaching.
Participants of horseback ascension can perform the entire route of this day on horseback.
Having gained about 600 meters in height, we come close to the foot of the mountain, where at an altitude of about 2900 meters above sea level, we set up our summiting camp.
Dinner and early going to bed on the eve of an early summit push morning. The temperature at night in the summiting camp can be around 0 degrees, and freezing at the summit.
Camping (double accommodation) in the Pabaku summiting camp.
Breakfast, lunch, dinner are included.

Day 5. July 1, 2020. Pabaku summiting camp (2900 m) – Pabaku summit (4000 m) – base camp (2300 m)

Early in the morning, around 5, after drinking tea and taking a light breakfast with us, we set off for summit push.
The height of Pabaku originally was 3997 meters. Somebody did great job on the top and poured a three-meter mountain of stones in the center, which made Pabaku a real four-thousand height mountain. Despite the relatively low altitude, the peak looks very menacing. Pabaku is one of the most pyramidal peaks in the world, it very much resembles the Matterhorn, and its name in translation from Lak language means "awl mountain", which speaks for itself.
Climbing takes place in the zone of the Arctic desert, along the crumbling rock, which makes it difficult to climb in some places. At the very top of the mountain there is snow. Climbing does not require crampon and is not extreme, but the last hundred meters we will climb carefully and slowly. Here, in the final stretch, our participants of horseback ascent will have to dismount and continue along with everyone without horses.
Summer is a good time to climb Pabaku, but in winter the mountain has 3rd category of difficulty.
Today we have to climb about 1100 meters in height, having made a 5-6 hour ascent to the "Dagestan Matterhorn". The descent to the assault camp takes about 2.5 hours.
After lunch in the summiting camp, we continue our return (about 15 km, participants of horseback riding carry out this trek on horseback) to the area of the village of Burshi to the base camp site, where we are getting the cars, dinner and a well-deserved rest.
Dinner around bonfire and exchange of experiences. Congratulations to each other with the mountain, the happiest moments.
Accommodation in tents (double) in the base camp of Pabaku.
Breakfast, lunch, dinner are included.

Day 6. July 2, 2020. Pabaku base camp (2300 m) – Caspian sea

After breakfast in the base camp, we say goodbye to Pabaku – the Lak relic, which is part of the Dyultydag watershed. The snowy peaks and glaciers of this ridge give rise to one of the deep rivers of Dagestan - Sulak, famous for the Sulak canyon and carrying its waters to the Caspian.
We also make transfer on the Caspian coast to our beloved Parnas recreation center.
The Caspian Sea, which has a territory larger than Germany, is the largest enclosed body of water on Earth, which is also called the lake and the sea. With a maximum depth of more than a thousand meters (the third deepest lake in the world), the Caspian Sea contains a volume of water more than three times the water reserves in Lake Baikal.
The water in the Caspian is moderately cool and only slightly brackish, which makes swimming truly comfortable.
Lunch and dinner at the sea. Overnight in double rooms at the Parnas recreation base on the Caspian Sea.
Accommodation in double rooms at the Parnas recreation base on the Caspian Sea.
Breakfast, lunch, dinner are included.

Day 7. July 3, 2020. Caspian sea – Makhachkala airport

Breakfast in a cafe in the recreation base Parnas. This day we spend on the clean beach of the Caspian Sea with large shell sand and emerald water.
Here you can rent a "tablet", "banana" or a jet ski twice as cheap as in Sochi.
Check out from the rooms at 12 o'clock. Lunch at sea and continue having rest.
About 4 p.m. transfer to the airport of Makhachkala (Kaspiysk) for the evening flight to Moscow. Direct flight with Aeroflot departing at 18:55 or Utair departing at 20:00 (or another, later flight).

We just came back from Dagestan and Chechnya. The views were amazing, and the people were warm and welcoming.
It was amazing to see how different Chechnya and Dagestan are, so don't miss the opportunity to see both of them! Organization was perfect. The car was a comfortable air-conditioned Toyota, and both guide and driver were locals who knew the area, the people and could tell us a lot about their life.
