TRAVEL PROGRAM: tour to Niger and Yamal
Day 1. September 16, 2026 (Wednesday). SALEKHARD (RUSSIA) - NENETS REINDEER HERDERS' CAMP
Meeting at Salekhard Airport at 8 am. We'll have morning coffee before heading to the Yamal Peninsula tundra. Our destination is a nomad camp, located near the mouth of the Baydarata River, in the area of the Yenzoryakha River. We will travel by a TREKOL all-terrain vehicle; the journey will take approximately 8 to 10 hours depending on the weather and road conditions.
We will have lunch at one of the trading posts (a stationary outpost with essential goods for reindeer herders) along the way.
In the evening, we arrive at a Nenets chum - a traditional dwelling, where we will be warmly welcomed by a Nenets family. Dinner in the chum will consist of authentic national dishes. Overnight stay in the hosts' chum.
Meals included: lunch, dinner
Accommodation included: chum (traditional Nenets dwelling)
* Recommended flight:
- direct flight from Moscow to Salekhard by Yamal Airlines, departing on September 16 at 3:15 am, arriving at 8:00 am,
- alternatively, you can arrive in Salekhard on a daytime flight the day before, September 15 (additional night in a hotel is charged separately).
Day 2. September 17, 2026 (Thursday). TRADITIONAL FISHING WITH NENETS PEOPLE
After breakfast — traditional Nenets fishing on the lake, the Yerkatayakha and Baydarata rivers, or on the coast of the Kara Sea (depending on the location of the nomad camp and the most suitable fishing spot). Setting or checking fishing nets. A reindeer herder uses any opportunity to delight his family with fresh fish, as he already knows beforehand which river or small lake holds the "living silver" of his native land. As soon as a new nomadic camp is established near such a place, they prepare their nets and await the catch. If there is a fishing rod in the camp, you can try fishing yourself (you can also bring your own fishing rod on the trip).
Simple tasks, like chopping firewood, are part of the Nenets' daily life. In the afternoon, if possible and by prior arrangement (for an additional fee), we may witness a traditional hunt. The Nenets hunt different animals depending on the season.
In the evening, we will gather around the campfire to listen to stories about Nenets culture and religion. A folklore evening with traditional Nenets epic songs — yarabts and khynabts. Lunch and dinner will feature national dishes, and we will spend the night in the chum with the Nenets families.
Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner
Accommodation included: chum (traditional Nenets dwelling)
Day 3. September 18, 2026 (Friday). GETTING ACQUAINTED WITH THE HERD OF REINDEER OR MIGRATING IN THE TUNDRA
After breakfast, we will get acquainted with the reindeer herd and observe the Nenets working with the animals, gradually immersing ourselves in the world of a Nenets reindeer herder. Here, a person's entire life is subordinated to the rhythm of the reindeer's life. Every day, regardless of the weather, they guide the reindeer into a coral — an improvised corral made of sleds and nets, which is set up in the morning when the herd appears. A semicircle is built from the sleds, tied together with a rope, into which the reindeer are driven. Then, several draft reindeer are caught, taken away to be equipped, and harnessed to the argish (caravan). According to custom, men leave the coral by stepping over the rope, while women pass under it. Guests will have the opportunity to participate in lassoing a reindeer and throwing the tynzyan (lasso). Photography is encouraged.
In the summer, there is a high probability of participating in the kaslanie — the reindeer herders' migration across the tundra (the relocation of the entire camp to a new site). During this period, the Nenets relocate to a new place several times a week, so we need to be prepared to change our location on any given day. For the move, the chums are dismantled and, along with all belongings, are loaded onto sleds. The Nenets gather the entire herd, harness draft reindeer to the sleds (narty), and move the herd several kilometers. At the new site, they set up the chums again and arrange the household. Kaslanie in the tundra is an integral part of a nomad's life. Over a year, reindeer herders cover several hundred kilometers north (in summer) and back south (in winter). Packing and moving during the summer migration takes several hours. We will be able to photograph the entire process.
Guests will have the option to travel by TREKOL all-terrain vehicles (included in the cost) or by specially prepared reindeer sleds — narty (for an additional fee).
Lunch and dinner (including national dishes) are provided, with overnight stay in the chum.
Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner
Accommodation included: chum (traditional dwelling of Nenets people)
Day 4. September 19, 2026 (Saturday). TRADITIONAL NENETS GAMES AND PARTICIPATION IN EVERYDAY LIFE
After breakfast, an introduction to the life of a Yamal chum housewife.
Women have no less important concern - to set up a home for the whole family. This means dressing and processing reindeer skins, which are then used to sew nyukas, covers for the chum. Dressing and shoeing the whole family from head to toe is also a woman's concern. Much depends on how warm and comfortable the malitsa for men and yagushka for women will be: after all, 40-degree frosts are no joke in the tundra.
Master-classes on processing reindeer skins, weaving from beads, making special natural threads from reindeer veins, sewing and trying on national clothes, photo sessions.
In the long summer days, we will gather mushrooms and berries together with Nenets children. Depending on the season, you can find cowberries and blueberries. Colorful berries and mushrooms grow intermixed on a white "carpet" of jagel. This is an ideal place for reindeer, which gain maximum weight at this time of year, when there are no mosquitoes or midges and nothing to distract them from their favorite treats.
If reindeer herders are nomadic near the Kara Sea during this period, we will get to the seashore near Baidaratskaya Bay and see the harsh nature and mighty power of the Kara Sea, which washes the entire Yamal Peninsula.
Today we will also get acquainted with traditional Nenets sports: wrestling, tug-of-war, throwing "tynzyan" (lasso) on "chorey" (a kind of "rudder" for reindeer sled), jumping over sleds, trots jump and many others.
Evening conversations around the campfire about culture and religion.
One more thing: in September there is every chance to see the northern lights!
Lunch, dinner (including national cuisine), overnight stay in a chum.
On request (extra charge) - ritual ceremony of reindeer slaughter.
Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner
Accommodation included: chum (traditional dwelling of Nenets people)
Day 5. September 20, 2026 (Sunday). NOMADIC CAMP - SALEKHARD

The route ahead takes us along the tarmac road through Dogon-Dutchi and promises to be a busy one: we will visit Hausa villages with their unique adobe architecture, drive through the famous Ader shopping district and have a picnic lunch. We will finish this long journey with accommodation at one of Tahua's hotels - Tarka or Marianne.

Day 9. September 24, 2026 (Thursday). TAHUA - AGADEZ (400 km, 6-7 hrs by car).
Early in the morning we depart for Agadez. Our route will take us through the picturesque surroundings of Lake Tabalac and the town of Abalac, where we will make a rest stop. Abalak is the gateway to the nomadic zone, and it is here that you can often witness the perpetual movement of nomads with their herds. Depending on the time of arrival and road conditions, we will try to organize a short tour of the town. The September landscapes will delight the eye with their lush greenery, bringing this nomadic route between Abalak and Agadez to life.
We plan to arrive in Agadez in the daylight to check into the Hotel de la Paix or Hotel Ténéré, where a welcome hot shower will be waiting for us. We will finish this busy day with an immersive medieval experience in the city's winding streets and dinner at the atmospheric Italian restaurant Le Pillier.
Meals included: breakfast, lunch
Accommodation included: Hotel de la Paix or Hotel Ténéré
Day 10. September 25, 2026 (Friday). AGADEZ. TRADITIONAL TUAREG CEREMONY AT THE SULTAN'S PALACE
Agadez is a historic city with an immensely rich culture, where legends and customs have been preserved for hundreds of years. The city is cosmopolitan: the Hausa and the Tuareg (North African nomads) live side-by-side, yet their customs are so distinct that they make this city a genuine treasure trove.
Part of the day will be dedicated to a demonstration of Tuareg traditions. Dances performed by local women's groups and the initiation of young men into their indigo turbans take place under the supervision of the *Tambari*—the supreme chieftain, the guardian of culture, and the curator of the *Bianu* dances. This is a unique event in Agadez, held once a year, typically in June. The festive ceremonies take place in the courtyard of the Sultan's Palace. Here, the Tuareg, survivors of the harshest corners of Africa, clad in their indigo garments and mounted on camels, will showcase their traditions. We will find ourselves in the atmosphere of a grand celebration and gain unforgettable impressions.
The second part of the day involves a walk through the streets of Agadez, a visit to the impressive mosque with its minaret, and, if possible, the famous house of the Senegalese baker. A trip to the market to buy souvenirs.
Dinner at the Italian restaurant Le Pillier.
Meals included: breakfast, lunch
Accommodation included: Hotel de la Paix or Hotel Ténéré
Day 11. September 26, 2026 (Saturday). AGADEZ - WODAABE NOMADIC CAMP IN THE ABALAK REGION. GUEREWOL FESTIVAL (290 - 350 km, 5 - 6 hours travelling time)
The morning will start with an off-road vehicle journey (with military escort) to the Abalak area, the nomadic territory of the Wodaabe (Fulani) people. These Sahelian pastures offer a rare chance to see the nomads and their livestock in their natural environment. On the way we will have a picnic and stop briefly at Abalaka, the last major settlement before camp.
The main event awaits us as night falls - we will get to the Guerewol festival, a kind of beauty contest among the men of Wodaabe. This is a multi-day gathering where, after a year of separation, the tribe meets to strengthen ties, celebrate weddings and engage in song and dance. We will witness spectacular camel races and traditional dances where men, adorned with make-up and elaborate headdresses, display their grace and beauty in front of a panel of women who select the winner. This ceremony is an important part of social life, where new couples are often formed.
The evening moves seamlessly into informal socializing around the campfire and participation in the famous Yaake circle dance, allowing a deeper insight into the hospitality and culture of this fascinating people.
Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner
Accommodation included: tents, bucket shower
Days 12 – 13. September 27 – 28, 2026 (Sunday - Monday). WODAABE NOMADIC CAMP. GUEREWOL FESTIVAL
The upcoming two days will be entirely dedicated to getting to know the Wodaabe people, becoming guests at their unique Guerewol festival and immersing in their daily life and ancient traditions.
Guerewol is not just a ceremony, but the heart of Wodaabe social life. It is a time when men, having adorned themselves, compete in dances for the title of the most handsome, and women act as strict judges, choosing their future husbands. This ceremony is a unique opportunity to socialize and find a mate before nomadic families disperse once again across the vast pastures of the Sahel.
Coming together at the end of September is an age-old tradition. After the rainy season, grass is abundant but scattered over vast areas. By the end of the month, all the herds converge near the towns of Ingal and Abalak on the rich salt pastures. These gatherings allow the herders to let the animals rest at the healing salt springs, while they renew bonds, form new couples and celebrate the annual Herewol.
The Wodaabe, whose name translates as "taboo people," are known for their strong adherence to tradition. The culmination of their culture is the Guerewol male beauty pageant. Men wear traditional costumes and apply contrasting yellow and black make-up to emphasize the whiteness of their teeth and the sparkle of their eyes. In the rhythm of the Yaake dance, they demonstrate not only beauty, but also endurance and the art of seduction. The main criteria are tall stature, grace and skill in dancing. Thanks to a special herbal potion, the participants can sing and dance for several days in a row, attracting the attention of the girls, who eventually choose the winner.
Our program includes photo shoots, personal encounters, visits to Wodaabe dwellings and talks about their culture and way of life, including lectures and interviews. This is a unique chance not just to see but to feel the emotion and power of this ancient culture, which remains a crucial link between the Wodaabe and the other Fulani of Niger.
In the evenings we will have the option to return to nearby Abalak to stay in a house with showers and enjoy cool drinks, or spend the night in tents to fully experience the atmosphere of nomadic life under the vast African sky.
Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner
Accommodation included: tents, bucket shower
Day 14. September 29, 2026 (Tuesday). WODAABE NOMADIC CAMP - TABALAK LAKE - TAHUA (170 - 200 km, 3 - 4 hrs by car)
Our morning will start with an unusual and lively event - a football match with the Wodaabe, who will take to the improvised field in their colorful traditional clothes. This friendly game will be a unique and memorable farewell to the hospitable people and to the place where the Guerewol Festival has been simmering for several days now.
Afterwards, we will make the return journey to Tahoua. We will be transferred across Lake Tabalak and past several nomadic Tuareg camps, where we will make stops where possible to once again experience the spirit of the vast expanse of the Sahel.
Upon arrival in Tahoua we will be immersed in the history of the area. We'll tour the Sultan's Ader Palace or visit a local Koranic school to learn about the region's rich cultural heritage.
This busy day will conclude with dinner and overnight accommodation at the familiar Tarka or Marianne hotels, where you can relax and share the memories of unforgettable days spent with the Wodaabe people.
*Important: Tahua hotels do not have enough rooms with separate beds (TWIN). They are mostly rooms with one large bed (DBL). We recommend a supplement of 45 euros for single occupancy.
Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner
Accommodation included: Hotel Tarka, Marianne or similar.
Day 15. September 30, 2026 (Wednesday). TAHUA - YAMA - BIRNI-N'-KONNI - DOGON-DUTCHI (300 km, 5-6 hours by car)
We will leave Tahoua to further explore the Ader region, the small homeland of the current President of Niger. Along the way we will admire the impressive Sudanese adobe architecture, making several stops for a closer look.
Next, we will visit Yaama, famous as the "city of 33 mosques". We will pay special attention to the Aga Khan Mosque, an architectural masterpiece honored with the prestigious Aga Khan Award. If possible, we will take a guided tour of the famous mosques and visit a local school if it is open.
The next point on the itinerary will be Birni-N'Konni, a busy trading area on the border with Nigeria. Although the border itself is 10 km away, the rhythm of life here is completely in line with the neighboring country, creating a unique atmosphere.
Our route will also take us through Dogon Dutchi, which means "Big Mountain in the middle". This place is known for holding animistic Bori ceremonies, an ancient tradition associated with the cult of genies. Similar to voodoo in Benin, these rituals were used to protect and demonstrate magical power, and we will witness this colorful and distinctive act.
After a busy day and lunch on the way, we will have an overnight stay at the Doutchi Inn tourist camp, a typical place with local flavor, where a simple restaurant, a small bar, shower and rest facilities and clean comfortable air-conditioned rooms await us.
Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner
Accommodation included: Doutchi Inn
Day 16. October 1, 2026 (Thursday). DOGON-DUTCHI - DOSSO - CURE - NIAMEY (275 km, 5-6 hrs by car)
Early in the morning we leave towards Niamey. Our way lies through the town of Dosso, where we will stop at the Jermakoye Palace, the residence of the honorable Sultan of the Jerma people. We will then turn off the main highway and head to Kure, the unique pastures that are home to West Africa's last free giraffes. Here in the wild, these majestic animals live in amazing harmony with the local nomads and settled inhabitants.
In the afternoon, we arrive in Niamey, the capital of Niger. After a late lunch in one of the colorful restaurants, we will be taken on a tour of the city center: we will visit the National Museum, see the main monument and the Juma Mosque, and have the opportunity to buy souvenirs at the handicraft market as a memory of the trip.
Then we will have a choice:
Main option: Accommodation at the comfortable Grand Hotel 4*, where we will be able to refresh ourselves after a long day. Then transfer to the airport for an international flight home.
Alternatively, for those who prefer to take their time, we will organize an overnight stay in Niamey with departure the following morning.
