Tour to Libya, eastern libya, cyrenaica, byzantine bazsilica athens of africa appolonia benghazi
Join our expedition to Cyrenaica — the green, historic heart of eastern Libya that almost no traveler gets to see.

We stand where the legendary Greek colony of Cyrene was founded in 631 BCE — the "Athens of Africa," a UNESCO World Heritage site and birthplace of the hedonist philosopher Aristippus. We walk through the colossal Temple of Zeus, the Sanctuary of Apollo, and an ancient theatre perched on the Green Mountain. Then we descend to Apollonia, Cyrene's ancient port, where Roman baths, Byzantine churches, and a 6th‑century fortress sit dramatically on the Mediterranean edge — with submerged ruins visible right in the sea.

We will explore the ancient Gardens of the Hesperides in Benghazi, we’ll see the exquisite 6th‑century mosaics at Qasr Libya, discover Ras Al Hilal — the “Crescent Cape” – a hidden oasis of turquoise water, and a Byzantine Basilica built by Emperor Justinian.

Eastern Libya is a region that virtually no one visits, making this a truly rare and privileged journey led by Alex Mzungu.

Full day exploration of Cyrene ancient site.
Perched on the lush Green Mountain, Cyrene was the oldest and greatest of the Greek colonies in North Africa, often hailed as the "Athens of Africa." Founded in 631 BCE, it became a pinnacle of classical culture and a major intellectual hub, renowned as the birthplace of the philosopher Aristippus, who founded the Cyrenaic school of hedonism. Today, its monumental ruins—including the colossal Temple of Zeus, a stunning amphitheater, and the sanctuary of Apollo—offer an unparalleled glimpse into the fusion of Greek and Roman civilizations in Libya.
In 1982 Cyrene was officially listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has also been on the List of World Heritage in Danger since 2016.
Visit the Temple of Zeus, Greek & Roman ruins, theatre and panoramic views. Exploration of surrounding archaeological areas.

Day 3. December 11, 2027 (Saturday). RAS AL HILAL – APOLLONIA – BENGHAZI

Ras al-Hilal, known as the "Crescent Cape," is a stunning Mediterranean oasis where turquoise waters, sandy beaches, and rare perennial waterfalls meet the green Jebel Akhdar mountains. The site also features a well-preserved 6th-century Byzantine basilica commissioned by Emperor Justinian, offering breathtaking views over the crescent-shaped bay.
Transfer to Apollonia, ancient port of Cyrene (25 km, 40 minutes driving). Visit Roman theatre and Byzantine ruins.
Apollonia served as the ancient port city of Cyrene, acting as its vital maritime gateway to the Mediterranean world for over a millennium. Unlike its inland rival, Apollonia boasts a stunning seaside setting, where the ruins of Roman baths, Byzantine churches, and a well-preserved sixth-century fortress sit directly on the edge of the sea. The site is particularly famous for its spectacular underwater ruins, allowing visitors to see submerged streets and buildings from the ancient city that were gradually claimed by the ocean.Continue driving back to Benghazi (225 km, 3 – 3.5 hours driving).
