PAPUA

March 29 — April 11, 2026
New Guinea Island, Papua, Indonesia
Tour New Guinea Island, Papua, Indonesia

* TOGETHER WITH RUSSIAN GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY

tour to Yamal, expedition to Nenets, Far North of Russia, explore Russia Yamal expedition Tour to Salekhard Nenets tribe people Aurora Borealis Russian Geografical Society expedition

We continue the legacy of Nikolai Nikolaevich Miklouho-Maclay in exploring the beloved island of this great Russian scientist. It was in Western Papua that Miklouho-Maclay undertook his second expedition, choosing the Papua-Kowiai Coast as one of the least studied areas of the island at that time. While many scholars and traders avoided landing on Papua-Kowiai due to rumors about the bloodthirsty and cunning nature of the local tribes, this only drew Miklouho-Maclay in—he sought to study peoples less influenced by European contact and external forces.

Our expedition will head into Western Papua, east of the regions once explored by the scientist. We will venture even deeper into the swampy jungles of New Guinea.

Two days by plane, two days navigating fast-flowing rivers by boat through untouched rainforest, and another day on foot through waterlogged jungle—sometimes waist-deep in muddy water—all for a single goal: to witness people who still build their homes high up in the trees and continue to use traditional tools.

Through the lands of the Asmat—once feared headhunters and fierce warriors—we’ll set out in search of nomadic Korowai camps in terrain so remote that large parts of it remain unmapped. This is a true discovery and a serious test of endurance.

Our unique expedition journey involves full immersion in and study of the traditional culture of the Korowai people in the upper reaches of the Eilanden River during their clan migrations and the construction of a high treehouse.

This joint expedition by MZUNGU EXPEDITIONS and the Russian Geographical Society will be guided by an RGS expert and an ethnographer from the Kunstkamera – Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography of the Russian Academy of Sciences, both practicing specialists in the cultures of New Guinea.

Participants will gain hands-on experience with anthropological fieldwork, including methods for collecting ethnographic materials, writing observational field notes, and understanding how to document traditional societies. Author-led seminars will introduce the material and spiritual culture of the Papuan peoples, providing deeper insight and context for interpreting what we observe in the jungle. The journey will also help explore how traditional culture is transforming within the Korowai community.
The results of the expedition and participants' impressions are planned to be presented at a seminar at the RGS Headquarters in St. Petersburg.

Tour to Yamal Nenets. Have you ever dreamed of going to the world's edge? But every nation has its own one. Nenets nomad tribe calls it Yamal peninsula, where they migrate year in year out with their countless reindeer herds, and where further there is only cold Kara Sea and ice of the Arctic Ocean. Here, at the world's edge, you will experience fascinating "chum life" of Nenets people, who live their life practicing reindeer breeding and fishing despite the weather, migrating to new pasture areas and setting their chums as easy as if it was a tourist tent.

By motor boat through Eilanden River it takes around 6 — 7 hours (packed lunch enroute), overcoming challenging stream and rapids, which is big adventure in itself. The upper-heads of Eilanden are wild with old rainforest on the banks and remote tribes living deep in the jungle.
Upon arrival to the first (modern) village of Korowai (motor boat crew waits for us in this village or upper/lower of the stream until we return), while engaging our porters, getting information about the itinerary and villages in the jungle, our cook prepares food and we have a dinner.

* Depending on the information about Korowai villages in the jungle (distance, direction etc.), that we get in the Missionary village and depending on availability of local guides and porters, the team leader can take a decision to immediately set off on foot into the jungle the same day upon arrival by boat.

Days 6 – 10. April 3 — 7, 2026 (Friday — Tuesday). KOROWAI TRIBE IN 3 DIFFERENT NOMADIC CAMPS

Within these days we live in 3 different Korowai villages deep in the jungle (Aleaton, Baylom and Marcus nomadic villages or others), engaging porters from each new village in order to find the further way or correct our itinerary.
We walk approx. 3 to 7 hours a day when we are changing location, overcoming rivers and swamps – a very big adventure! We sleep in our tents on the earth or in the traditional tree houses together with Korowai people.
Tribal Korowai are commonly called tree house people because they build houses high on the trees to avoid the threat from another tribe or from evil spirits. They used to practice cannibalism less than decade ago, and people say that in some villages it is still the case. Some of Korowai still live in the Stone Age almost having no any appliances made of metal, but this is something which is passing away rapidly.
In the jungle in each village (nomadic camp), we can see one or two families. Each Korowai family has the territory to find food. Korowai are nomadic people and they always move from one place to another looking for the food. Hunting animals in the wild, fish in the creek or in the swamp is their lifestyle, which is considered the work for men. Korowai women are responsible for gathering such kind of food like insects, sago (sago is one of the palm trees they process to get starch – Korowai's staple food) etc. They eat everything what lives in the jungle and if they serve food on you, then you should eat it, as saying "no" may really offend Korowai people. In every village, if Korowai want to make something special, they can invite their neighbors to join.
In one particular village (nomadic camp) we can stay 1 or 2 days and see what their activity is and join them. On different days we participate in following activities of Korowai tribe: experience the full process of extracting sago starch from sago palm tree and collecting sago grubs, go with Korowai to hunt wild pigs or cassowary, traditional way of fishing with Korowai, traditional folklore and storytelling around fireplace in the tree house, having meals etc.
We will have big chance to witness the process of building tree house. This procedure gathers together people from different families who always help each other in such an important event.
The building of traditional tree house high up on the tree (some 20-25 meters) is a true quintessence of Korowai lifestyle, when one can witness all important activities and real life of the tribe.
Our purpose is to find the most interesting Korowai villages deep in the jungle as possible within this timeframe and to find traditional habitable tree houses built high up on the trees (up to 20-30 meters high) and also participate the main event – building the traditional Korowai treehouse high up on the tree. If building the treehouse requires more days staying at the same place, the team leader may take such decision.
While staying with Korowai tribe, we sleep in our tents on the earth or can stay in tree houses.

Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner
Accommodation included: tents or Korowai traditional tree houses

Day 11. April 8, 2026 (Wednesday). KOROWAI TRADITIONAL NOMADIC CAMP — MODERN VILLAGE OF KOROWAI — BINAM VILLAGE

After breakfast, we start walking towards the first modern village or another place on the riverbank (some 4 — 7 hrs walking).
Upon return from the jungle, we load everything to the boat and continue the journey by open motor boat downstream Eilanden River until the village of Binam (it takes around 5 – 6 hours) *.
Here we stay in lovely family of our captain.

Meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner
Accommodation included: local house under mosquito nets

* Depending on the distance from the jungle nomadic camp to the Missionary village and the time it takes to get there, the team leader can take a decision to come back to Baigon or another missionary village 1 day earlier and stay overnight in Missionary village.

"This is my most anticipated and, perhaps, deepest expedition for the last couple of years.
Where it became possible to combine in a scolarly format two completely different nomadic cultures, both of which are at the peak of my professional interest."

  • Natalia BELYAKOVA

"The tour from the northern to the southern nomads is a great scientific ambition, challenging logistics and high emotional research intensity. Joining this ethnographic and cultural immersion involves an exceptional experience. Personal transformation is inevitable - welcome to travel to yourself."
EXPERTS' PORTFOLIO
SCIENTIFIC JUSTIFICATION OF EXPEDITION
Expedition participants will be involved in the inner workings of anthropology, including learning about fieldwork, collecting ethnographic materials and keeping a scientific journal of observations.
The original lectures by scholars will delve into the material and spiritual culture of contemporary nomads, allowing a deeper understanding and accurate interpretation of what is observed in the tundra and jungles.

The scientific objective of the expedition is a comparative study of nomadic traditions in the North and South. In particular, we will discover our own influence on the societies in question: how the tourism industry is integrated into the lives of the groups under study and what place it takes in their economic practices. Participants will try to see culture through the eyes of locals, but not just as an outside observer.

KEY FEATURES:
TOUR TO KOROWAI
Papua, Indonesia

Best season: March – October

A 5-day trip on several airplanes, boats and on foot in rubber high boots across swamps of the Western part of the New Guinea island, which still remains the one of the last islands on Earth where people live in Stone Age. People from small tribe of Korowai build their houses high up in the canopy, hunt cassowaries, believe in spirits and in some remote parts of the jungle still practicing cannibalism.

Hunting with Korowai people, fishing in a traditional way by means of drying river bed, together with the whole village getting sago starch from sago palm tree trunk (which forms up to 90% of their ration!) and Korowai favorite treat – Capricorn beetle larvae, something which you may not refuse :)

Overnights in tents or together with the indigenous people in their house on iron tree built with no nails at 40 meters height!

Overnight in Asmat people village, who half century ago were known as headhunters and held in fear all neighbor tribes (including Korowai), and nowadays peacefully fish in Brazza river and visit Protestant Church.

Tracking on wet inhospitable jungles, wading rivers through or on fallen trees, sinking up to waist level in swamps, losing the way, orienting with the help of local guides by the sun at daytime and by stars at night time.
